Newjeans, a trendy girl K-pop group with five members (Hyein, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hanni), has been rising in popularity lately. With their recent performance in Chicago at Lollapalooza, the crowd went wild for the girl group. Especially with their latest drop, Super Shy, they are all the more popular.
Their early written songs, “Cookie,” “Hype Boy,” “Attention,” Ditto,” and more were already famous, to begin with even before their 2nd EP, “Get Up,” which helped the girl group gain more popularity even after their debut.
Members
Two members of Newjeans, Hanni and Danielle, speak fluent English since they are both from Australia. That’s another reason Newjeans is so popular: their stage presence and their interaction with their English-speaking and Korean-speaking fans. Their audience can form connections if they speak one of those languages, and they could relate to the members more and feel more connected, even if they’re just fans. The other three members are learning English and already sound almost perfect.
Their youngest member, Hyein, has also broken many records for the most youthful K-pop idol (She was born in 2008) to perform in Lollapalooza and the youngest performer! Newjeans is a very new group, so most members are 18 or younger, helping them gain a younger audience.

Newjeans’s music genre is K-pop, and pop R&B. A main factor is their famous and fresh genre and how K-pop R&B is hard to find. R&B is a prevalent genre, primarily because of the app TikTok, which mainly promotes R&B music. This is another aspect of how Newjeans is gaining popularity because of being a fresh new genre, with fresh dance moves and vibrant colors, and their concepts are eye-catching compared to other groups.
With their genre trending and many apps promoting their genre as well, that is useful to their group and company and really benefits their recognition.
Newjeans Concept
The group’s concept started as more of a school, young teenager aesthetic because the members were young. In the dance of “Hype Boy,” most of their performances were outfitted with bunny hats, baggy jeans, and tight shirts, which is more of a teenage streetwear look. This concept has never been done before because Newjeans’s company (Hybe and ADOR) caught on to the recent trends of the year 2022.
After that concept, the group followed with “Super Shy,” which is more fresh, very vibrant colors, just like in the music video. The Newjeans members explained how when they were filming the “Super Shy” music video, there was no saturation, no exaggeration on the colors. They could see all of the colors clearly in real life when they were dancing because of their vibrant clothes and the beautiful weather in Portugal (where they filmed the M/V).
Very popular for Early Debut
Newjeans debuted in 2022, making it one year since they debuted. That’s very surprising due to their popularity, how many performances, stage presence, vocal and dance skills, and more. Variety.com explains, “They even broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest K-Pop group to hit one billion total streams on Spotify in just 219 days.” With these records broken, Newjeans is one of the most popular K-pop groups 2023. Although they’re just starting as a group, it’s clear that they have a great future ahead of them.
