What Really is Prom’s 2024 Theme?

Prom season is in the air, meaning dress shopping season is also. Every dress store is stocked up to sell each girl their dream prom dress, which most have been dreaming of since they were little girls. This means everything must be to perfection, including hair, makeup, date, and most especially, the dress. Every year there is one theme that overrules any other. But first, what were some past prom dress trends many participated in?

There are extreme distinctions and similarities between prom dresses throughout the year ranging from styles and colors.

2000s

The 2000s was an era of glitter, rhinestones, and bright colors, including dresses. The running theme of strapless, spaghetti straps, two-piece dresses, asymmetrical styles (off the shoulder), and cowl necks was seen everywhere during this era. Materials like satin and fringe were very common, with details of rhinestones and beading. And don’t even get me started on the color scheme of the 200s, ranging from aqua to chartreuse.

2010s

The 2010s was an era of experimentation due to its bizarre fashion trends with side cut-out dresses and vibrant prints. It had its elegant aspects, with vintage dresses, long and ethereal dresses, and beautiful details. Who couldn’t say the 2010s wasn’t a good era to live in, though, with the vibrant patterns and jeweled dresses just for prom?

As a society, why wouldn’t we want to go back to the era of the real prom dresses, which were long and extravagant with beautiful details ranging from jewels to pearls?

2024

We have all seen prom dresses for prom 2024; some either love or hate them. It’s a running-long trend from the social media app TikTok that girls are swaying away from flashy prom dresses to more casual ones, calling them easter dresses. To determine today’s standard style I have to say I have come across some girls buying the most gorgeous dresses that fit the extravagant theme of prom. Prom is supposed to be a night where you wear such an extra dress that you can only wear it once. But some girls just have been leaning toward the more casual routes with more flowy and brunch-looking types.

TikTok is the majority reason for the style, color, and material of dresses you will see teenage girls get. They become victims of fast fashion, which I have taken part in, due to the most likely scrolling on TikTok and seeing a dress they like on their For You Page, then checking the comments to find the dress of their dreams whom ten other girls think they have as well. This all causes girls to have very similar styles or forces their styles to stay in the trend, resulting in the casualness of the prom dresses.

Santiago

Although I made this big deal about girls stealing away from the extravagant prom dresses, these girls at Santiago did not miss it. Most followed a common theme of the most beautiful fitting dresses with either beading or a mesh type of corset. You can tell the introduction of corsets, whether a full one or the style of it, is most definitely in, and these girls are loving it. And blue is this year’s color that has caught so many girl’s eyes this year. I even went to a common dress store to find out myself and asked a few workers.
