The Rise of TikTok

TikTok is taking social media by storm. TikTok is a short video platform that was first launched in September 2016. At first, it was an app primarily used in Asia. Then its parent company, ByteDance, spent approximately $1 billion to purchase musical.ly. This purchase had a huge impact because musical.ly was pretty big before it lost most of its popularity.

The rise of this app is quite remarkable. It was originally only known to people in Asia. The parent company’s purchase of musical.ly brought a large audience due to the other app’s popularity. It led to a lot of posts from TikTok to Instagram. In June of 2018, the app amassed 500 million monthly users; this is a big deal because it was the world’s most downloaded app in the first quarter of 2018 with 45.8 million downloads. That means it was downloaded more than Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat, which are huge for their popularity and revenue.

The features of TikTok and musical.ly are similar, but TikTok added a lot of new features that have made the app immensely better. The main feature that is different is that you can do duets with other users, which means you can collaborate on the video. This can create a large variety of videos on the app that can become popular. These videos are shown all across social media, not only on TikTok. These videos appear on social media apps, ranging from Instagram to YouTube to Snapchat.

Most of the videos on the app are drama based or humor based. There are a lot of people that take these videos seriously, and, unfortunately, it sometimes doesn’t go well for them. There are a lot of “trolls” that will mock their video to get a reaction, and, depending on the type of person you are, these reactions can either be hilarious or toxic. Despite trolls being on the app, they aren’t serious; they are trying to get a reaction and be funny so they can become viral. There are a lot of ways to become viral, you can simply be good at making videos and have a large audience on the app or you can be a troll and make it on a compilation video on YouTube. I personally watch these compilation videos because they are hilarious and can make you laugh pretty hard. Even though it can be funny, some videos are just not right and can be classified as bullying towards the people who do in fact take this app seriously. If these creators are in fact offended, they should know that these trolls are never serious. The app is for teenagers, so it’s expected that there are some trolls and haters. There are a lot of people who have carved out a career from using a short video app to become even more successful on a different app; for example, David Dobrik was originally on Vine and when Vine closed David Dobrik moved on to YouTube. Since joining YouTube, he has garnered a huge following and is very well respected in the community.

The popularity of TikTok is giving the creators of videos a huge opportunity to branch out onto another social media platform. This may be the best option available for now because the app is trending upwards, but it will eventually lose popularity. If the app does, in fact, begin to lose popularity, the creators on the app will also begin to lose popularity, unless they begin to make content on other platforms. This will give them a chance to get an even bigger following and they can hopefully still stay relevant in social media. They can always just ride the TikTok wave and eventually become less and less popular to a point where they are no longer relevant. Even though TikTok is currently popular, the app will eventually lose popularity and become no longer relevant to the internet, like almost every social media trend the world has ever seen. TikTok has had a tremendous rise to fame, but it will have an even harder fall.
