21 Savage, a rapper originally from Britain, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Since most of his songs talk about his life in Atlanta, his fans assumed he was born and raised there, and were surprised to find out he wasn’t. 21 Savage came to the United States when he was 7, and according to officials, after his Visa expired in 2006, it was never renewed, causing his arrest.

Shortly after the arrest, celebrities such as Kendrick Lamar and DJ Khaled teamed up and spoke about immigrants facing deportation. They concluded by inviting the listeners to sign a petition using the hashtag “#Free21Savage.”

That wasn’t the only time celebrities spoke up about his situation. At the Grammys over the weekend, 21 Savage was mentioned in a few speeches. He, of course, couldn’t attend, but Post Malone and Ludwig Göransson made it clear he was missed while his and Post Malone’s song “Rockstar” was featured. 21 Savage also sent a special message to his fans saying that although he wishes he could be there with them, he is there in spirit.

After spending more than a week in detention, on February 13th, 21 Savage was released from ICE custody. His mother thanked many celebrities, attorneys, lawyers, and fans for their faithful support whether it was on social media, or going as far as hiring a lawyer for the rapper. 21 Savage has since applied for a Visa, however, some are saying there is a small chance he might get deported due to his being in the United States illegally and President Donald Trump’s hard stance on illegal immigrants.
