On Saturday night, October 4, 2025, in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, there was a mass shooting. It happened near the intersection of Bibb Street and Commerce Street. Two groups allegedly opened fire on each other in the middle of the crowded entertainment district during a hectic weekend after a football game. The shooting started around 11:30 p.m.
Fourteen people were known to have been shot, and two people were killed. The two people who were murdered were Jeremiah Morris, a 17-year-old male, and Shalanda Williams, a 43-year-old woman. As for the people who were shot, five of them were in a life-threatening condition. And according to the police, seven of the people who were shot were under the age of 20.
There were multiple firearms with high-capacity magazines and different calibers, said to be used. The investigators noted that they believe it began with one specific person in the crowd who was being targeted. Due to the large crowd and the presence of younger individuals, the impact on public safety and perceptions of downtown Montgomery’s safety are minimal.
Four suspects have been arrested so far. One is named Kemontae Hood, he is 21, and charged with one count of capital murder and nine counts of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault. Another is named Dantavious McGhie, who is 19 and faces the exact charges. The next one was Javorick Whiting, who is 19, and charged with one count of attempted murder, and he was released on a $60,000 bail, which has drawn a lot of criticism. The last suspect to be arrested is an unnamed juvenile. The Montgomery Police Department is working with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Marshals Service for this case. The investigators are reviewing more than 150 cameras in the area of the incident.
Steven Reed, the mayor of Montgomery, and MPD Chief James Graboys held press conferences expressing frustration and urging legislative changes. Mayor Steven Reed said right after the shootings, “We welcome any assistance the state is willing to provide. But real safety requires more than additional troopers or task forces; it requires the courage to confront the culture of easy access to guns and a lack of responsibility among those who carry them.” Another quote from him is, “Montgomery is not a battlefield. It is a city of families, faith, and future. The people of this community deserve solutions rooted in partnership, not political soundbites”. They have called for an expansion of Aniah’s law, which is a state constitutional amendment that allows the denial of bail for violent crimes, which include attempted murder and other acts of violence. Authorities are arguing that the current law is far too narrow. The city council suspended the “entertainment district,” where the incident occurred, stating that new measures will include stricter patrols, loitering restrictions, and enforcement of open-beverage policies.
This incident really shows how gun violence can happen in public entertainment zones, and not only affects the intended targets, but it can also affect innocent bystanders, even minors. For Montgomery, there is now increased pressure to maintain downtown safety and preserve tourism and entertainment. There is a lot of controversy about the fact that one of the suspects has been released on bond despite serious charges.
This was a severe and dangerous incident. It appears that officials are already working to make Montgomery safer, implementing numerous laws and additional safety measures. The investigations are still going on, and they hope to get this whole situation solved so that they can make their home a safer place, so that nobody has to worry about being shot on a fun night out at an entertainment district.
