If you live in Corona, you have most likely heard of the Amazon Fresh in Bedford that opened around this time of year, in February. On August 27th, 2020, Amazon first announced that it would relaunch its grocery store service, Amazon Fresh. They began building stores across the United States with technology. This included 8 states: California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, New York, and Tennessee. The most populated States with these technology-based stores were California, with 22, Illinois, with 10, and Pennsylvania, with 6.
In a previous article titled “The New Amazon Fresh Hot Spot,” published in 2018, the author reported on the new Amazon Fresh store in Corona, CA, and provided a detailed summary of what these stores would look like and how they differed from regular grocery stores. They gained considerable public interest when their stores began to appear around the country. After a bit, the appeal wore off once the big name, Amazon, was at the grocery store they were shopping at.
As of January 27th, 2026, Amazon announced it would close all 58 Amazon Fresh stores and convert them into Whole Foods stores. If you didn’t know already, in 2017, Amazon bought Whole Foods for $13.7 billion. Since then, the Whole Foods corporation has been working under Amazon, however, with its own title and identity.
The reasoning from the company for the foreclosure of the stores was apparently after “a careful evaluation of the business”. They also stated that, to accommodate their customers’ busy lifestyles, they will speed up their Amazon grocery delivery. They hope to achieve this by introducing perishable items, such as produce and frozen items, into their same-day delivery service. This includes the “option to shop produce, dairy, meat, baked goods, and frozen foods alongside millions of everyday household essentials, [the] electronics…” that will be delivered within hours of ordering. An estimate suggests this same-day delivery service will grow 40x in the coming years.
Another reason Amazon changed Amazon Fresh to Whole Foods was to better appeal to its customers’ needs. Most likely, when choosing where to shop, customers are less likely to choose a grocery store linked to their digital shopping app. Before the purchase of Whole Foods, it was already a fairly popular and successful grocery company. After its purchase, sales increased by 40% and expanded to 550 locations in the United States. So, choosing to develop and grow a company that is already preferred by the public and customers is a smarter business decision.
Why Is Whole Foods So Liked?
Whole Foods is a well-known grocery store, especially in California. Why is it so adored and successful that Amazon has to shut down its Amazon Fresh locations to be replaced by Whole Foods?
This grocery store presents itself as an organic and diverse option in the grocery store world. The senior director of business analytics and consumer research at Whole Foods Market, Ashley Klebs, supports the claim that the company is committed to its customers’ best interests. And if the best means breaking into the organic and natural channel to provide the most “savvy brands that can match their marketing to shoppers’ motivations.”
It seems this company wants to provide the best possible service to its customers. So, is this why Whole Foods is so preferred?. Well, clearly, this is a major reason it is so popular. Customers like what’s new and the ability to try it, and Whole Foods does just that through its organic marketing.
Amazon Fresh was never going to match the marketing appeal Whole Foods has been developing since its acquisition. It’s truly sad to see such a new business fail, though another will shine.
