On February 1st, 2026, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was reportedly missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona. Just the day after she was reported to be missing, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos released a statement surrounding speculations of law enforcement about this “disappearance” of Nancy Guthrie.
Immediately, this missing persons case gained traction publicly, not only because of the mysterious nature of this disappearance, but because of who it was who disappeared.
Nancy Guthrie may not have been well known herself, but she is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, the anchor of the “Today” show.
As this case began to circle the nation and law enforcement continues their research, ransom notes begin to surface from the Guthrie family as they seem to “plead” for the return of their mother. This note reportedly contained details about her home and the clothing she was wearing when she went missing. (according to CBS)
With the information that authorities had, they had begun to suspect that Nancy Guthrie had been abducted at some time overnight from January 31st to February 1st. This suspicion arose because she was last seen around 9:30 p.m. that Saturday night. But even with the information they had, it did not give investigators enough to determine whether the attack was planned or random.
While inspecting the scene on February 3rd, Clara Migoya and Richard Ruelas, reporters for The Arizona Republic, while visiting Nancy Guthrie’s home, had reportedly seen dried blood on the outdoor tile entrance that was later confirmed to be the blood of Nancy (by the sheriff’s department), and this heavily supports the idea of an aggressive or aggravated attack.
On Febuary 4th, 2026, an emotional video was released on instagram of the Guthrie siblings speaking on their mother disappearance and basically pleading for her to be realsed or returned while also including heartfelt messages of how they miss their mother by saying, “We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again”, and, “Mama, if you’re listening, we need you to come home. We miss you.”
Not long after this, on February 10th, 2026, a man was detained for questioning about Guthrie’s disappearance. This was done during a “traffic stop south of Tucson”. But due to no proper leads after questioning and his delivery story checking out that he was delivering packages in the area, this person was said to be released.
This same day, on February 10th, 2026, the FBI had released pictures on social media of an armed person who looks to be tampering with the camera at the front door of Nancy Guthrie, the morning she had disappeared. These pictures had been taken from a video, which, according to FBI director Kash Patel, “recovered from residual data located in backend systems.” Even with the released photos, authorities have not been able to identify whose faces appear in them.
In the social media post made in regards to the suspect photos Kash Patel wrote, “Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors − including the removal of recording devices.”
Following the attack, US President Donald Trump responded, citing the case’s high traction due to its mysterious origins. Trump himself has said that this case “disgusts” him after seeing the footage from the victim’s front door and encourages anyone with information to contact the FBI.
