Sat., Feb. 1, ASB held a Sadie Hawkins dance, where the girls ask the guys to the dance instead of vice-versa. The theme for the night was based on the final scene of “Grease” where the students of Rydell High celebrated their graduation with a carnival. In an attempt to reenact the scene from the iconic film, ASB setup a small carnival outside our gym doors and did a remarkable job in doing so.
From the junior parking lot you could see the small ferris wheel illuminate the outdoor basketball courts. As you walked outside, you could see tufts of cotton candy floating through the air, blending with the smell of popcorn. A sitting area was set-up next to some heaters in front of the stage where a band, featuring students from our school, playing live music. At the opposite end of the courts, carnival games were set up where you could knock down bottles or test your strength with a hammer.
Inside the gym, “Grease” was being projected onto the screens hanging from the center of the ceiling. At one end of the gym was the dance floor, but at the other end was a model of a diner where you could buy snacks, sit down, and enjoy the movie. Toward the entrance of the gym was the photo booth, probably the most popular activity at the dance. From pink ladies to preppy girls and jocks to greasers, everyone dressed for the occasion.
Sadies wasn’t ASB’s most spectacular dance of the year, but in a nutshell, it was successful.
