Events of the Case
On Sunday, December 4th, 2025, the renowned director Rob Reiner (who was 78) and his wife (producer) Michele Singer Reiner (she was 70) were found deceased in their own Los Angeles (Brentwood) home, and the cause of death for this couple was very apparent (multiple stab wounds. The previous evening before the stabbing happened, when this couple was found deceased, it was reported that they had attended a party.
After the death of Rob and Michele Reiner, their son Nick Reiner (32 years old) was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, and this could have led to the maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or even the death penalty.
Recent Court Hearings and Circumstance
Going into Nick Reiner’s trial, he had been in custody since his previous arrest in late December of 2025.
After the initial trial, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman told the reporters who were standing outside the courthouse that the death penalty was not officially being sought.
In his words he stated, “We take the process in which we determine whether or not the death penalty should be sought extremely seriously, and it goes through a very rigorous process,” followed by, “We will be looking at all aggravating and mitigating circumstances, and we have invited defense counsel to present to us, both in writing and orally in a meeting, any arguments that they would like to make in consideration for our going forward or not going forward with the death penalty.”
Due to Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, Reiner did not enter a plea at his “initial arraignment,” as Jackson withdrew as his counsel and Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene now represents him (as stated by the CNN News outlet). According to Jackson himself, his team remains in support of Reiner and his “best interests,” but certain circumstances have made it “impossible” to continue representing him (both Alan Jackson and his team).
Following his withdrawal from the case, Jackson stated that after further research on the events, he believes, “pursuant to the laws of this state, pursuant to the law in California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”
According to prosecutors, the events of the murder began in the morning, as that is when it was believed that Reiner had stabbed his parents in the master bedroom of the home. Other family members of the Reiners had also told detectives that Reiner had been living in a guest house on his parents’ property, and that at the party the previous evening he was seen arguing with his father.
Since this case has gained attention, it has been noted that Reiner has been quite open about his struggles with addiction and mental health issues, which have even led to multiple visits to the mental hospital.
On the day of Reiner’s trial, he was seen with a shaved head and in brown prison clothes. Before the trial began, he appeared to speak briefly with his lawyer, and during the trial, Nick Reiner only seemed to answer yes to a question from the judge.
On Monday, February 23, 2026, Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to the two counts of first-degree murder in the killing of his parents.
