Fires Burn the South

Fires Burn the South

Cole LaCroix, Op/Ed Editor

As of this Wednesday there are 32 fires that have yet to be contained, raging in most of the southern states. There is no evidence at any of the fire sites that suggests that the fire was started on purpose, and no one has suspected that the fires are some form of arson. However, the fires have landed innocent civilians into the hospital. So far, there are reportedly 200 people injured and around 80,000 acres have been scorched.

It is believed that the lack of water is the cause of the fires, given how negligible rain is in the South. The associated Press stated that “There are places getting ready to set records for most numbers of days in a row without rain.” Lack of rain in dry, windy land renders these areas most susceptible to wildfires.

The states are doing what they can to fight the fires. Tennessee is willing to give a reward for any information on any arsonists that could have started the fire. In North Carolina, Governor Pat MCcrory called a state of emergency and has evacuated 5 counties. There are more than 1,100 firefighters trying to stop the raging infernos in the South. These brave men and women will continue to fight the fires until they are extinguished or until they die out on their own.
