On a cool night, a strong earthquake hit along the coast of Chapias, Mexico. September 7, 2017 an earthquake with an 8.2 magnitude trembled cities throughout Mexico.  This earthquake has been the strongest since the last earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 stroke Mexico in 1985.

This earthquake was so powerful that it was felt miles from the epicenter. In the cites of Oaxaca, Guatemala, and Mexico City itself there was severe damage caused. In the city of Oaxaca at least 45 people died. The total of deaths in this natural disaster was about to 61 persons. Not only was there lives lost in this earthquake but many poorly built homes and buildings collapsed as well.  Homes that were still standing were probably left with no power. This earthquake triggered a small tsunami with waves at the coast as high as 2.3 ft.  These waves were not considered a threat to the U.S Tsunami System.  Although authorities did evacuate some coastal areas there wasn’t an evacuation needed for Mexico.

On September 19,1985 the strongest earthquake with an 8.0 magnitude left Mexico City with a fear of the natural disasters that bring company to life on Earth.  This earthquake killed 10,000 thousands and left 30,000 thousand of people injured.  After this occurrence 3,000 homes were demolished also leaving 100,000 with serious damage. Since Mexico City was a plateau surrounded with volcanoes and mountains there were many lakes in ancient times which were leaked to underground causing the ground to unstable.  Due to the unstable ground under the city of Mexico City the shaking lasted for 3 minutes which caused fires and explosions.

Mexico is a country which is vulnerable to earthquakes because of the tectonic plates that overlap each other.  Although earthquakes teach lessons to those who are unprepared the fear is still an experience that is not wished upon anyone.
