“I’m haunted every single day with visions of you murdering Laci. Did she know you were murdering her?” In 2024, a murder documentary on Netflix was released about the stages of Laci Peterson and her baby’s disappearance up to her death.
The Beginning of her disappearance: It all began on December 24th, 2002, when Laci’s husband, Scott Peterson, called Laci’s family members to report her missing after she took the dog out for a walk. After a while, this reached out to the police, and the detectives searched the house for clues. They started to find suspects such as Scott due to him being the husband and went to search around the cars they had outside, where they found a receipt of his fishing license and some lures unopened on December 20th. Later that day, they took Scott to interrogate him, where he was explaining what he was doing that day with a very calm demure, which became suspicious by the detectives. You would think your husband would be distraught that you’re missing, but not in this case, where he wasn’t showing any signs of sadness.
The Affair: On December 30th, they found out about a woman named Amber Frey, who met Scott a month before claiming he was single. Mrs. Frey stated that December 9th would be his first Christmas without his wife, implying he knew she would begone. This further proves Scott could’ve planned to kill his wife Laci two weeks before she went missing. According to the police reports, detectives grew more suspicious and provided Frey with a device to record her conversations with Scott.
The Truth: Around January 15, 2003, the detective provided the family with more information about the disappearance and the affair with Mr. Peterson and Mrs. Frey. As Laci’s family heard this horrible news, they truly believed Scott was involved in her disappearance or even death. Nine days later, the family went to a press conference and told everyone in the world about Scott’s affair, stating that they were no longer supporting him based on his not cooperating or saying anything about the case. On the same day, Mrs. Frey went to the press conference to clear her name as people looked at her horribly during the investigation.
The Bodies: On April 13th, 2003, after months of searching, two people discovered a fetus and a decomposed ribcage on the shore of Richmond’s Point Isabel Regional Shoreline Park. Once they heard this news, they took hold of the evidence. Five days later, they confirmed the DNA verified it was Laci and her unborn child of 8 months. Her body was decomposed entirely with missing parts, and how her child died in utero, changing the case to a homicide. Based on the information he told the detectives, Scott was a stronger suspect, such as hair wrapped around some pliers, which were confirmed to be Laci’s. Another piece of evidence was when the police found homemade concrete in the boat purchased two weeks before Laci’s disappearance, something that Scott could’ve used to sink her dead body in the water.
Evidence: With the evidence of homemade concrete and unopened lures, detectives finally had enough to arrest Scott Peterson. They planned on tracking his whereabouts through calls and following his car, where on April 18, 2003, he was caught at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
The Sentence: A year later, on November 12th, 2004, Scott was convicted of two counts of murder, including first-degree murder. This conviction finally gave Laci Peterson the justice she deserved and allowed her family to rest, knowing her murderer was in jail.
