The incident occurred on the Charlotte Light Rail, en route to the East/West Boulevard station. She boarded the train, and there was a man behind her. There was no known interaction beforehand. A few minutes later, he pulled out a knife, stood up, and stabbed her three times in the neck. There is also a public release of surveillance video showing the stabbing. Everybody ignored it, and nobody else sitting on the train nearby tried to help her. Right after, he walked to another part of the train and took off his hoodie. He was arrested immediately after getting off the train. He got charged with first-degree murder at the state level. He also got charged for committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. The duration of the sentence is undetermined, which I believe is somewhat unusual.
The suspect’s name is DeCarlos Brown Jr. He was 34 years old at the time of the incident. It turns out that he has a substantial criminal record; he had been arrested 14 times prior. His past convictions include armed robbery, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and felony larceny, etc. He served time in prison for about five years for armed robbery. He is said to have mental health issues, with schizophrenia being one of them. His family had reported many behavior problems with him. There was also an incident in early 2025 where he had made 911 calls repeatedly from a hospital, claiming that there was “man-made material” inside his body controlling him. He ended up getting arrested for that situation and was somehow released shortly after.
There are many things I think that the government must do better to stop situations like this from happening. The government was far too nice to him. I understand that he was diagnosed with some mental health issues; however, we cannot be letting people out on the streets like that. He had been arrested 14 times. I personally think that is a sign of mental insanity. He kept getting released because the bail system failed, which is not something that should be happening. If someone continues to commit crimes, they should not be given numerous chances for redemption. If somebody cannot keep themselves out of jail, it should be a sign that they are meant to be there, or at least in a mental institution. Individuals who have been arrested multiple times should be considered a danger and not be released. Even his family members have asked for him to be institutionalized, but the system did not follow through. The government should fund more psychiatric hospitals so that individuals who are a threat to others can get the help they need.
Mental illnesses this severe are not just a personal mental-health issue; they become a danger to others. If we want to keep America safe and crime-free, truly, we need to come to peace with the fact that some people cannot be saved. We need to stop giving unlimited chances to people who physically cannot control their violent tendencies and keep them locked up. Due to the government’s failure to get this man the help he needs, an innocent young girl with much life ahead of her has lost her life. I personally believe that if someone commits murder, they should get the death penalty; if you take an innocent person’s life, you should get yours taken as well. Who are we, as humans, to decide if another person loses their life or not? Many see the death penalty as a controversial topic; I, however, do not understand how people would ever support a murderer even walking the Earth. I find it disgusting that they think it’s okay to take away someone else’s life, and I believe the only suitable punishment for them is to have their life taken.
I also believe that trains, buses, and other transportation systems should have security systems just like airports do. People should not have to fear for their lives while traveling on a bus or train. Firstly, all trains and buses should be equipped with security cameras and have security personnel on board. They should also have bag checks and random screenings. This isn’t just about one case; there’s a bigger picture here, about how America treats repeat violent offenders and public safety. The government’s #1 priority should be protecting innocent citizens at all costs. The government needs to prioritize public safety and give these violent criminals the punishments or help they deserve or need.
However, after this situation, North Carolina introduced “Iryna’s law”, which focuses on more onerous bail restrictions, mandatory mental health evaluations, and speeding up death penalty appeals. To me, it is very sad that it cost a young girl her life for them to create that law. The government needs to get stricter with these criminals and enforce more public safety laws.
