Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Guardians of the Galaxy are some of the most loved Marvel movies. Some of the most hated? Thor: Love and Thunder, She-Hulk, Ironheart. All recent. Have the newer Marvel movies and shows made fans skeptical about the future of the Marvel universe? What is the future of Marvel looking like? These are some questions fans are wondering and will be discussed.
In the past, Marvel movies have, for the most part, been loved. According to David Harth, a comics expert, “Comic readers had known just how great Marvel could be for decades, and that translated to the movies. The successes mounted, and soon the MCU became the biggest force in the entertainment industry. Everyone loved the movies, with critics ignoring the problems and audiences loving everything that came out.” This quote illustrates how fans adored the movies so much that even the critics overlooked the minor issues. It also shows how the film can be just as great as the comics. According to an IMDb article in 2018, “After dominating the global box office for three weeks straight, Avengers: Infinity War has now claimed the crown and become the highest-grossing superhero film of all-time.” This represents how, even after its release, it became the highest-grossing superhero movie. That’s how loved it was. What about the not-so-loved ones?
An example of a not-so-loved, more recent Marvel show is She-Hulk. Here are some reviews fans have written on IMDb: “1/5 stars. I have all of the She-Hulk comic runs, from Savage She-Hulk #1 to the present-day run, currently sold in your comic shops at the time this Disney+ show was released. She is one of my favorite Marvel women and ought to be treated with high respect while having a lot of fun. But the MCU failed to capture the charm, fun, and heart of the lovely green lawyer from the comics.” Another one is, “The show isn’t funny, it’s not exciting, it’s not emotional, it doesn’t seem to have a useful message, so what’s left at that point….The 4th wall breaking seems completely out of place and isn’t used for anything other than repetitive exposition, so it just comes off as cringy.” These are just two out of the many bad ratings. According to fans, the more recent Marvel movies and shows seem to have lost the spark they once had.
Although some recent movies haven’t received good ratings or reviews, upcoming films have fans very excited. Some include Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. A Santiago student and Marvel fan stated this regarding the forthcoming Spider-Man movie, “I have pretty good expectations. Compared to the other movies, I think this one will be great.” – David Figueroa (12).
To summarize, the past Marvel movies have been viewed very positively. In the more recent ones, the fan reviews haven’t looked that great. Marvel has the opportunity to make a remarkable comeback with the new Spider-Man movie, the Avengers movie, and other shows. Will Marvel be able to make their comeback if they release a new film?
