A blanket of 20–40 inches of fresh snow transformed Mammoth Mountain into a winter playground just in time for opening day. By sunrise on November 14th, the line for the first chair stretched across the plaza, buzzing with riders eager to kick off the season. It is definitely the beginning of the snow season, as 200 people were waiting for the bus to the slopes.
Opening Day
November 14th was the first day that Mammoth Mountain opened. What exactly opens, though? Well, the lifts, runs, terrain parks, and lodges with services are all open. Unfortunately, opening days may be postponed due to the amount of natural snow received, whether lifts pass inspections, whether ski patrol can mark terrain, and whether weather conditions are suitable for lift operation. On opening day, there is a banner breakthrough for the first chair, with people lining up for hours before sunrise. The “ first chair riders” break through the banner, which brings them joy and excitement. “Conditions on the mountain are looking great for opening day,” said Emily van Greuning.
The Main lodge
The main lodge in Mammoth is a popular spot; it offers many exciting activities, including one of the most well-known: a DJ. The energy at the lodge is unbeatable, with people dancing, singing, and celebrating all together. There are also many big giveaways at the lodge on opening day; one of the biggest ones is that the first 100 riders in line get a beanie.
Big companies like Oakley and Burton occasionally give away products, which attracts even more people to the location.
The Food and Drinks
Food is essential when you’re working hard in the snow. The Lodge offers good food, including coffee bars, breakfast items, burgers, pizza, and nutritious bowls. For adults aged 21 and over, they have beer tents and outdoor bars.
Shopping!
One of the most notable aspects of opening day is its impact on the entire town. Opening day doesn’t just involve the main lodge and snowboarding; it can also give you discounts when shopping in Mammoth. When discounts drop, locals run to secure those deals that include everyone. Many stores introduce new merchandise on opening day, prompting snowboarders and skiers to buy more gear at the store because of the discounts.
What if you don’t own a snowboard or skis?
Rentals are extremely popular in Mammoth; there are 12 on-mountain rental shops. They also offer gear, such as boots and warm snow clothing. Helmets are required and must be added to any rental order. The rental places offer storage and pre-pickup orders and are very good with their clients.
The shops do get very busy, especially in the morning, so be prepared to order or pick up.
How does the Day sound to you?
Here is a recap: Opening day dates range from November 10th to 15th; it is loud and busy, with a variety of snowboarders and skiers, from beginners to professionals. The atmosphere there is excellent and well worth experiencing.
Whether you’re a Beginner or a Professional, Mammoth Mountain has something for everyone to enjoy!
