Marcello Hernandez, a national SNL fan favorite, released a Netflix special on January 7 last year. It has been recognized as a hit since its release and has many people talking.
About Marcello Hernandez
Comedian and actor Marcello Hernandez was born in 1997, making him 28 years old. He was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and he takes pride in being Dominican-Cuban American. Growing up, he was surrounded by women. In his special, he talks about how when he was in high school, his mother’s best friend and daughter came to live with him. From these experiences, he can create a lot of material for his set. In this special, it’s not only a good laugh but also a chance to learn a lot about Marcelo Hernandez, who turns his life into comedy.

How he got his start
Hernandez began performing comedy throughout his life, appearing in dive bars, small clubs, and poetry slams while attending John Carroll University. He then moved to New York in 2019 to pursue comedy full-time. He built a following on social media, posting bits and clips from his stand-up shows. During the pandemic, he moved back to Miami, where he gained momentum for his comedy online. Eventually, he was scouted for SNL after his 2022 performance at the Just for Laughs festival. He then joined the famous SNL cast in 2022, making him the first-ever Gen-Z cast member. Additionally, he has been featured in films, most recently Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler, and is set to star in Shrek 5 in 2027.
His American Boy Special is on Netflix
I saw various clips of his Netflix special on social media and had been meaning to see what the hype was about. One night, I was upstairs and heard laughter from downstairs. My parents were both laughing, crying with laughter as they watched Marcello Hernandez’s special. As a personal SNL fan, I am a big fan of Hernandez’s work and have shown some of his sketches to my family. Specifically, as a Hispanic person, hearing Hernandez’s jokes about his culture, family, and experiences was not only hysterical but also relatable. A personal favorite bit of his is the one about women and how they get ready. When comedians tell jokes about women, they always seem to rub people the wrong way because they usually demoralize women and make them sound a certain way. But with Hernandez’s bit, he was able to make relatable and funny jokes about women and how they get ready and how they react in silly situations like getting a wax, getting ready for a date, etc. When I watched this scene, I found myself sinking into the couch, laughing next to both of my parents.
Overall, this Netflix special was attention-grabbing, relatable, and, in an enjoyable, almost nostalgic way, described his Dominican-Cuban American childhood, all while being hysterical. I believe Marcello Hernandez’s career will go very far and, hopefully, make his name a household legend as a comedian, actor, and writer. If you ever find yourself needing a good laugh, this Netflix special will not disappoint.
