The new year holds many exciting things for many people. For sports fans, that thing is the Super Bowl. With the 60th Super Bowl happening in less than a week, fans are excited to watch the yearly tradition unfold. One of the biggest moments of the Super Bowl is the Halftime Show, but this year’s is causing a rift among different fan groups.
Since late September 2025, we have known about Bad Bunny’s upcoming performance at the Big Game. While many people opposed the idea of the Puerto Rican artist playing, many loved the idea of unleashing a multicultural performance onto screens around the world. Now, in early January, Green Day were announced as opening the show. Many mixed opinions were sparked alongside the announcement. Given Green Day’s reputation as a very politically charged band that doesn’t hold back, many football fans saw this as a chance for the Band to preach about current global issues. Following the announcement, President Donald Trump has said he will not attend the event. “I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible,” he said.
As natives of the Bay Area, Green Day expressed their thoughts about performing in San Francisco. PageSix.com reports that Green Day says, “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard; We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!” During the press release announcement, NFL Director of Event Presentation (Tim Titubo) exclaimed, “Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL Legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX.” With this article being written both before and after the performance, all the details of Green Day’s set can now be revealed.
Across the band’s four-song set, they opened with their classic ballad “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life”. After wrapping up their slower song, they kicked it into high gear with three songs from their 2004 album “American Idiot”. Contrary to people’s beliefs, Green Day did not speak out about the political divide during the event. Many speculate that a contract was holding Green Day back from speaking out. Many think it was a sheer act of cowardice. Though if you look back at previous Super Bowl performances, it is obvious that the NFL wanted to keep the event a family-friendly, non-controversial showing. Mashable.com says, “It’s not entirely surprising that Green Day would not make an explicit political statement — the NFL is a relatively careful organization, and it might not want the headlines that would follow.”
Overall, Green Day definitely showed up for the Big Game. Though they were not able to make a big statement during their show, their appearance was enough to get their point across. As the band continues to demonstrate its relevance, 2026 is sure to be a big year for the group.
