This year’s halftime show has been one of the most talked-about, controversial, and anticipated performances of all time. He was announced as the headliner on September 28, 2025, to perform on February 8, 2026. The announcement made headlines immediately. People were outraged but also thrilled and excited to see Bad Bunny.
Why Was It So Controversial?
In this day and age, politics is very prominent, and people in America feel deeplyare feeling very divided and discouraged. With all the ice raids, protests, and other events, etc., many people are feeling hopeless. Especially minorities, which is why his performance announcement was a very big deal. Of course, you had the side that was thrilled for this performance to take place, though you also had another side that had more negative things to say about it.
Some people were outraged and even petitioned to have the performer removed. The, the current president, Donald Trump, said a few weeks before the game that Bad Bunny was a “terrible choice.” Many rallied with the president. The retaliation went so far that Turning Point, a nonprofit organization founded by Charlie Kirk (a right-wing activist) and Bill Montgomery (a conservative activist and businessman), created its own halftime show starring Kid Rock as the headliner, with other performers like Brantley Gilbert and Gabby Barrett. Many right-wing folks prefer this performance to the NFL halftime show. Just to inform you, Bad Bunny’s halftime show was the 4th most-watched in history, right behind performers like Kendrick Lamar, Usher, and Michael Jackson.
Prior To His Performance, and Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed:
Those who chose to watch this performance, like me, were looking forward to it. In my experience, since my family hosts the Super Bowl almost every year, we clean and prep all day long until the game starts. This year, one thing was different: the music playing all morning and afternoon was obviously Bad Bunny. Many other people across the US were preparing for Bad Bunny and practicing their Spanish for this performance. In fact, interest in language learning has surged, prompting apps like Duolingo to see a 35% increase in activity before its performance. If that doesn’t illustrate influence, I’m not sure what does.
I could honestly list out every single detail of his performance and how every little thing was symbolic and extremely important, though I will simply just list some of the more hidden details you might have missed:
- The Boy Sleeping On The Chair:
During the wedding afterparty part of his performance (which, fun fact, was a real ceremony), you saw Bad Bunny singing “Baile Inolvidable” and dancing along with the other dancers. The camera follows Bad Bunny as he dances, and at one point, we see him walk over to the chairs where a little boy is sleeping and wake him up. This moment, while it may bepossibly confusing to others, is heartwarming and culturally relatable. It is a social norm that Hispanic parties/events last all night as people dance and have fun, though this leaves the kids sleeping on chairs until the party/event is over. This is a common sight in my generation and culture; I can say I have been the child sleeping on a chair, waiting to leave. That’s why seeing it on screen was such an attention-grabbing moment for many. Reaction videos have come out since the Super Bowl, and we see that this short second scene was such an impactful moment.
- The Power Outage/ Utility pole:
At the end of his performance, the camera pans to utility poles that appear to be without power, in a power outage, and Bad Bunny climbs onto them. At first, nobody really thinks much of it, but this moment was actually an ode to the frequent power outages Puerto Rico experiences due to its poor, fragile energy grid.
- Lady Gaga/Ricky Martin:
Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin are complete icons in society. Both LGBTQ+ representations and activists. Lady Gaga is known for speaking out for the queer community and is seen as a major icon among the queer community, which is why when she showed up as a surprise guest, not only did it serve as a bridge across different music genres, but it also served as an ode to the queer community. Ricky Martin is another major icon in society, especially among the millennial generation. There is even a trend of moms reacting to Ricky Martin’s performances, since he is also a symbol to many.
- Local Businesses cameos
Many local businesses were showcased, and featured power cameos, such as a small nail salon where women get their nails done, which is a powerful representation of a common norm in Hispanic culture. We also see a taco stand named “Villas Taco”, which is a real taco place located in Highland Park.
- The Grammy handover
And finally, during the halftime show, the Grammy handover, we see a quick scene where it appears a family is watching Bad Bunny’s acceptance speech after winning Best Album this past year for Debir Tirar Mas Photos. The little boy then walks up to the TV where Bad Bunny is and hands him the Grammy. This cute interaction actually has a very deep significance. This scene was actually supposed to symbolize Bad Bunny handing over his Grammy to his younger self.
The Impact of his performance:
Overall, it is without question that Bad Bunny’s performance was one of the most highly symbolic, influential, and downright entertaining performances of all time. Not only was it a fun watch with a catchy performance that just made you want to dance, but it was also very deep, inspiring, and symbolic, which, while watching, honestly put me to tears. Because seeing representation of Hispanic/Latin culture is so important. Just the last few minutes where Bad bunny shouted out every flag that he had following him of countries in America including all hispanic countries plus the US and Canada, it brought genuine happiness to my heart, as it did for many others because although things may seem hopeless in this day in age, just like Bad Bunny said “seguimos aqui” meaning “We shall stay here”.
