When you think of all-time icons of Pop music, who comes to mind? To a vast majority of people, the insanely obvious answer would have to be Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop” from the early ‘70s to the late 2000s. With his professional career spanning from 1971 to 2009, Michael’s career can be seen as one of the few that have made such an impact on the music industry. Up until now, though, something was missing: A screenplay based on his legacy. Now in 2026, we finally have just that.
Musical biopics have always been a big interest in the movie industry. Films like “Ray”, “Walk The Line”, “Straight Outta Compton”, and “Bohemian Rhapsody” have all been influential parts of the genre. Even though these films were very well received, viewers always thought a biopic was missing from the collection. Where was the film behind the life of Michael Jackson? For years, fans have held this exact question in the back of their minds. In February of 2022, Lionsgate’s announcement was finally adapted: “Michael” was going into production. About 4 years later, the film’s first official trailer was released. The hype was at an all-time high for the King of Pop to return to the main stage.
With the film’s initial announcement, many wondered who would take on the role of Michael. In early 2023, Jaafar Jackson announced that he would be playing his own uncle on the big screen. According to People.com, “It’s incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life,” director Antoine Fuqua said in a January 2023 statement to Variety. “There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar, who has a natural ability to emulate Michael and such a great chemistry with the camera.” Amazingly, Jaafar has no prior acting experience, which makes his performance even more impressive. Other notable cast members include Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Miles Teller.
According to the film’s official description, “Michael will bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop.” Another excerpt from People.com reads, “The film presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale – from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances.” It is reported that the film will cover all major periods of Jackson’s life, including his rise to childhood stardom with the Jackson 5. 9-year-old actor Juliano Krue Valdi will portray a young Michael, alongside Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Jackie, Jayden Harville as Jermaine, Judah Edwards as Tito, and Jaylen Lyndon Hunter as Marlon.
Overall, this movie marks a new beginning for Michael Jackson’s legacy. From being coined the “King of Pop” from the 70s to the 2000s, to having a record-breaking biopic made about him, Michael Jackson continues to inspire new audiences and heal the world for years to come. Even if you are not that familiar with Jackson’s work, you are not alone; this new thriller of a movie might be your gateway to becoming his next superfan! So, the big question is: will you be there?
