After years of everyone patiently waiting, James Cameron is bringing the die-hard Avatar fans back to Pandora with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the next movie in this series. The film was released in December 2025, making it one of the year’s most popular movies, if not the most. Only a couple of movies have reached the billion-dollar mark in revenue, and James Cameron produced 4 of them. Avatar movies are known for breaking records and showing advanced levels of movie production. Fire and ash continue after Avatar: The Way of Water, only this time, it reveals the darker side of that planet, focusing on the new Navi groups bound by anger, destruction, and fire. Instead of peace and balance and everyone praying anyway, there is a whole other group that can be just as dangerous as the “pink skins,” aka humans.
The movie is very different because it has a different question from the rest: what happens when pain and hate take over i
nstead of harmony? Unlike the first two movies, which focused on peace and everyone being together as one, this movie looks at the basic elements of the Na’vi world itself. Cameron once stated in a podcast that the movie will challenge the idea that one side is always good and the other is always bad—two opposites.
One of the biggest changes in this movie is the introduction of the new Navi people, referred to as the Ash People; their tribe is most likely believed to live near volcanoes and hot, burned lands. Their lifestyle is centered on fire rather than the forest or the ocean, as in the first two movies, and their beliefs and what they worship are very different from those of the rest of the Navi; the Ash People are much more aggressive and show little to no sympathy.
The fan favorites who are still present in the movies are Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their kids from the second movie. However, their roles are slightly different. Jake struggles with being a leader because he’s just confused and scared of what can happen, since his son was murdered in the last film. Neytiri deals with loss and anger, and their kids are forced to grow up faster than the usual kids because their dad is a target in the eyes of humans, and they are now living in a dangerous world.
This movie is timely because die-hard Avatar fans have waited 3 years for it, which is way less than they had to wait for the second movie. With the advanced visual effects and a darker storyline, this movie promised something new and more exciting than the last two films.
At Santiago High School, many students were excited for the movie to come out. One of my friends said the movie looked like it had more action and a lot more badness. One of my other teachers said this movie is important because it shows how technology and storytelling can be well integrated.
