Banksy has long been an anonymous artist who conveys political and social messages through his art, but on March 13th, a major investigative publication reported that his identity has been revealed; or has it? Banksy is a stage name the guerrilla street artist has used to stay anonymous. He is most known for his artwork, such as Girl with Balloon, which symbolizes hope, innocence, and the fleeting nature of childhood. His subversive street art often combines political, social, and anti-establishment commentary using his distinct, high-contrast stenciling technique. On brand with his anonymity, Banksy’s work is well known for mysteriously materializing overnight, and he disappears without a trace, posting it online and claiming it as his own. For decades, his work has been admired by many, yet he remains anonymous primarily to avoid arrest for vandalism, as most of his artwork is created illegally.
New information suggests that Banksy is, in reality, a 52-year-old man named Robin Gunningham. This information came from a Reuters Investigation: a high-impact journalism project that provides in-depth reports and visual stories on global affairs, relying on extensive research, data, and interviews to uncover hidden truths.

According to Reuters, investigating Banksy’s identity began with a clue a witness the Reuters had questioned, “‘An ambulance pulled up to a bombed-out apartment building in this village outside Kyiv […] masked men carried cardboard stencils […] Then they pulled out cans of spray paint and got to work. An absurd image appeared in minutes: a bearded man in a bathtub, scrubbing his back amid the wreckage.’ Its creator was Banksy, one of the world’s most popular and enigmatic artists.” Since then, they have been chasing a series of leads, setting out to uncover his identity.
As stated by Reuters, their investigation led them to this point: “Another candidate, perhaps the prime one, was Robin Gunningham. The Bristol native had been “unmasked” as Banksy in 2008 by The Mail on Sunday. The British tabloid said its year-long investigation had “come as close as anyone possibly can to revealing” Banksy’s identity.” They found that Banksy, or Gunningham, had changed his name in 2008 to one of the most common names in the United Kingdom in order to preserve his anonymity in plain sight: David Jones.
Reuters kept following leads, speaking to about a dozen witnesses in 2022 who claimed to have seen him spraypainting. Although none of the witnesses wanted to reveal too much about his identity or what they said, they gave Reuters enough clues to find an old photo of Banksy from 2004.

According to Indulge Express, “Back then, photographer Peter Dean Rickards published the image and identified a man wearing shades in the picture as the elusive artist — but Banksy’s manager denied it was him.”
Whether the man behind the mask is Robin Gunningham, David Jones, or someone else entirely may never be officially confirmed. What Reuters’ investigation does prove is that someone has been carefully and deliberately maintaining that mystery for decades — and that the art, whatever its source, keeps showing up exactly where it is most needed. Unless Banksy is apprehended, it is unclear whether this information on his identity matches. For now, Banksy will remain anonymous, creating revolutionary political artworks that reflect people’s perspectives on society.
