What to Know About Santiago E-Sports?

What+to+Know+About+Santiago+E-Sports%3F

What is something you would want people to know about E-Sports?

E-Sports California CIF adopted E-Sports as one of their high school sports, and right now, they’re doing “Smash Bros, League of Legends, and this year they’re adding back NBL 2k and NFL Madden.” It has been a considerable debate since California first added it to the official CIF sports. Colleges now have teams for E-Sports and career programs for E-Sports, and the majority has something to do with computer science and many elements going into its designs. E-Sports does count as PE as well, but it’s more so a PE class that specializes in their Sport.

How many students are in the Sport?
The team has 20 students returning from last year’s team, and the last time they checked the numbers, they had over 30 students.

What is the E-Sports goal?
Santiago wanted to grow the Sport and popularity and get the recognition it deserves and for it to be a household name like football, basketball, and other sports. They also hope for everybody to know about it.

What would you want students to know about the Sport?

You feel like you’re in a team environment and gain communication and leadership skills. You have to be able to work together, which brings the students closer. You also gain specific skills and advantages at Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, and League of Legends.

When was E-Sports established?

This is their third season, and they started in 2021.

What skills can students gain from this Sport?

Social skills, leadership skills, and management skills time, just like all the other student-athletes, you have to balance your school life and put in time for whatever Sport you are involved in.

What have students accomplished in the past?

The first year, they had a Rocket League team, and they earned second in the state. They had a Mario Kart team that made sixth in the state. One of the League of Legends teams ended up in the top three with over 100 teams.

When does this take place?
It takes place after school, at 4:15. The season starts in the second semester, meaning it’s a winter sport they are currently practicing to get them ready for tournaments, competitions, etc.

How many teachers help run the Sport?
Mr. Tyler is the E-Sports manager, and he manages the team. They also have Mr. Estrada, who is a counselor here and is the coach of the team. Mrs. Gonzalez, who used to be a student teacher, has been coaching the League of Legends team. The coaches enjoy seeing the kids benefit as a team, and seeing them collaborate and communicate lights them up.

Background on Mr. Tyler
Mr. Tyler is a CTE teacher on our campus and has taught for over twenty-three years. He attended La Sierra University, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Business Accounting. He worked in accounting for twelve years and then started teaching in 2000, and he officially started here in 2006. He is in the CTE department, which stands for Career Technical Education. It focuses on academic areas that fall into various career choices.

We wish the E-Sports team the best! ?
