A Look Ahead to Winter Sports
Sports are always among the most exciting parts of the school year, and this year’s winter sports include our CIF-winning girls’ soccer team and our highly ranked girls’ water polo team. Our girls’ basketball team looks to bounce back from a rough start, and our boys’ basketball team tries to continue their undefeated streak. The boys’ soccer team will aim to maintain its high level of play, and the wrestling teams will aim to have another strong season.
Boys Basketball
Our boys’ basketball team is coming off a 22-10 season where they placed fourth in the Big XIII league. In league play, they went 4-4 but aim to improve that record this season. Drake Nguyen of the team says, “We’ve been putting in work, and are looking forward to a great season. So far this season, they are 7-0 and will likely remain strong. This undefeated start to the season mirrors last year’s record, so they should be able to replicate their success this year. Their next home game is 12/12 at 7:00 pm against Liberty.
Girls Basketball
The Girls’ basketball team was 17-12 last year and 5-3 in league play. Their 5-3 record in the Big VIII League placed them third. Currently, they are 2-10 in their first 12 games, but as Olivia Aelick says, “We’re trying to bounce back and get some momentum going. They will look to flip the script ahead of their next home game on 1/9 at 7:00.
Boys Soccer
Last season, our boys’ soccer team finished the season with an 8-7-3 record. They ended the 24-25 season with four consecutive losses, but have yet to lose this season. They are currently 1-0-1 with a dominant win over Hillcrest and a tie against El Toro. Marvin Quintanilla says, “Our season is off to a pretty good start. Hopefully, we can keep it going for the rest of the season. Their next home game will be 12/10 against Canyon at 6:30.
Girls Soccer
Our girls’ soccer team is coming off a very successful season where they won the CIF State Championships. They also had a dominant 24-3-2 record and went undefeated in the league. They also had a very impressive goal differential of +64. So far this season, they are on a similar run. Through 4 games, they are 4-0 and have allowed only 1 goal. Annalyn Copeland says, “Our team is super impressive. I feel like we have a real chance to win the state back-to-back. Will they be able to repeat?
Girls Water Polo
Girls’ water polo had an awe-inspiring season last year. With a 24-6 record, they were ranked 24th nationally. Unfortunately, they fell in the quarterfinals against El Segundo. They look to continue this dominance and have won their first four games of the season. They appear dominant in their last two games, having won each by 10 goals. This team looks excellent and poised to make a great playoff run again. Their next home game is 12/9 at 4:00.
Wrestling
Wrestling had a successful year. In their five league matches, they went 3-2. Wrestling is unique because it is focused on the individual and not the team. A successful season for a wrestler ends with going to state. Haaris Khan says, “We’ve worked super hard at practice these past few months, hopefully that translates out there on the mat.” Last year, their star wrestler, Landon Hernandez, had a very successful season and went to state, where he placed 4th. They aim to improve on last season’s record and send some wrestlers to state again this year.
