Most students experience ASB through the posters they see in the hallways, the football game themes, rallies, or big events, but what most don’t realize is the amount of behind-the-scenes work it takes to make every school tradition flow smoothly. ASB isn’t just a leadership class; it’s the engine that powers the school.
Behind Club Rush
One of the significant events ASB undertakes at the beginning of the year is Club Rush. What is a simple display of tables and sign-up sheets is actually the result of months of planning. ASB approves clubs, organizes the event layout, and contacts each club to ensure they’re prepared. This includes constant communication and the handling of forms and approvals far from the simple, one-day event students see.
The Business Side of School Life
ASB also serves as the school’s administrative center. Whether it’s a new club seeking approval or a sports team seeking reimbursement, ASB handles the business side of activities. It’s structured, although sometimes tedious work, but necessary for the school to function.
Football Fridays
The most visible part of what ASB does occurs under the Friday night lights. Students see the posters, the themes, and the packed student section; what they don’t see is the hours in preparation for every game. Members of ASB arrive early to decorate, set up equipment, check sound systems, and ensure every detail aligns with the weekly theme. It is a
weekly commitment for the entire fall season. “Making posters and the preparation beforehand is always worth the result of the game.” – Angela Lopez (Senior President)
The Videography Team
Another hidden layer of ASB is videography. ASB students made all the recap videos and sports highlights posted on the official page. While you’re scrolling through Instagram watching those epic game highlights, an ASB videographer spent their entire weekend hunched over a computer, perfecting every transition to the second. On top of this, rallies, basketball games, events, and spirit weeks all require extra recording and editing. Clearly, videography is one of the most demanding roles in ASB.
Homecoming
Homecoming is one of the most intense projects ASB undertakes. Besides the decorations, ASB communicates with the party planner, selects the theme, orders props and crowns and sashes, and coordinates the whole Homecoming Court process. They email organizations, make group chats, design Instagram promos, plan the halftime show, assign
runners, write scripts, and even secure a car for the king and queen’s sendoff. And after all of this, underclassmen stay behind to clean up long after the dance is over. Clearly, this shows a lot of demand from the ASB students that goes completely unnoticed.
Run Throughs and Perfection Behind the Scenes
ASB has full run-throughs before major events, working out timing, scripts, and movement to perfect it. Even traditions that have been discontinued, such as Mr. and Mrs. SHS, had hours upon hours of rehearsal. It’s polished and exciting to students, but only because ASB worked very hard in preparation for it.
The Time Commitment You Don’t See
The most surprising part is the number of hours that ASB puts in. Many stay after school for setup, meetings, editing sessions, or cleanup. Between event planning, communication, rehearsals, and design, ASB members have to devote dozens of hours outside of the school day. Though their work often goes unseen, it shapes the entire shark experience.
